Established in 1969, now home to one of Australia’s most iconic cool climate wines, Langi Shiraz. Mount Langi Ghiran – Aboriginal for home of the yellow tailed black cockatoo – is set amongst the dramatic backdrop of the Great Dividing Range in the Grampians region of Victoria, producing iconic cool climate wines.
European pioneers planted the first vines at Mount Langi Ghiran in the late 1800s, but the winery’s modern-day vineyards did not take shape until the 1960s. An Italian immigrant family from the Veneto, the Fratins, planted vines on the property in 1969 from cuttings of a pre-phylloxera Shiraz clone originally from the Northern Rhône.
With the assistance of viticulturist and winemaker Trevor Mast, who took over winemaking in the 1980s, Mount Langi Ghiran established itself as one of the first and most-respected producers of cool-climate Shiraz in Australia.
The raw elements of climate, soil, and vine combine to create this unique vineyard which is one of the most isolated in Australia. The weathered granite cliff face and sedimentary soils, the cold prevailing winds forming off the Southern Ocean and the historic vinestock all play a critical role in producing the distinctive flavours of Mount Langi Ghiran wines.
Our focus is on producing distinctive cool climate wines with each vintage a reflection of our unique site and its seasons with unrivalled cellaring potential. The long, slow ripening of our grapes, particularly Shiraz, contributes to the development of a stunning range of fruit flavours, perfumes, pepper and spice that are harnessed in the winery creating graceful wines of depth and detail. Harnessing the quality of the fruit with intuition rather than following any winemaking recipe is what makes each new release so exciting.
As part of our Sustainability Action Plan and as certified members of Sustainable Wine Growing Australia (SWA), we believe that sustainability starts in the vineyard, harnessing our natural biodiversity, all whilst reducing our environmental footprint. From inception of Mount Langi Ghiran, predating our certification with SWA, the cornerstone of our management plan is the in-depth knowledge of our vines, soils, waterways and flora and fauna. Having a knowledgeable understanding of the vine makeup, to us, truly represents what sustainable longevity is.
With a deep respect to honour the legacy of Mount Langi Ghiran and fully demonstrate the unique terroir of this special site, our team is shaping the future of this iconic winery. Pictured L-R: Damien Sheehan (Chief Viticulturist), Adam Louder (Chief Winemaker) and Elizabeth Ladhams (Winemaker).
